Before we tell you about hair loss, let’s understand hair first. Each strand of hair consists of the root called Follicle, which is under the scalp. Above the scalp, the part of the hair that is visible is mostly made of keratin. Keratin is the protein that is left behind from dead cells. It is the same substance that your nails are made of. An average human has between 1,00,000 and 1,50,000 strands of hair. Each strand has a life span of anywhere between 2 to 6 years. Each strand of hair goes through three stages in its life cycle .
Stage one is the growth phase. When each hair follicle receives nutrition and You can see growth of up to 1 cm per month. Most of the hair on people’s head is in the first stage. This stage can last anywhere from 2-6 years. The longer the hair stays in this phase the longer the hair grows. Stage two is when it goes into a resting phase. Nutrition to the strand stops and so does the growth. Stage three is where the resting hair is shed. Once growth stops, cells above the root are shed. It is normal to lose about a 100 to even as much as 200 strands of hair in a day.
When one strand falls off, a new strand of hair grows out of the root. And the cycle continues. The problem that people with hairloss have is that cycle gets interrupted. When one strand falls off, regrowth does not happen as normal, leaving behind bare areas on the scalp. In most cases, areas on top of the head are affected and people can have completely normal hair growth on the sides and at the back of the head
